It's not just the US. Canadians need to hear this. Every European country that has slithered into right-wing autocracy needs to hear this. Evil doesn't present its calling card, and you can get used to almost anything. It took twenty-odd years for Germany, etc etc. Humans seem to have a talent for ignoring all but the most blatant and immediate warnings; we are terrible at thinking ahead to disaster.
Your descriptions of everyday life in the midst of violence and collapse go straight to the heart, and they filled me with anxiety about what I'm seeing - and also what we might not be seeing.
I don't know how to say, "I'm sorry for what you went through" without sounding like a pretentious git. I am sorry, intellectually, but because I haven't gone through anything remotely similar my response is pathetically limited. But I can't thank you enough for telling us the truth.
